Final TSC Logo

Hello Team,

Here is the final TSC Logo. I have saved the logo in multiple formats including
  • .eps
  • .ai
  • .pdf
  • .png
  • .psd
  • .pct
  • .swf
  • .tif
I have created six sizes of the logo at .5-inch intervals, from .5 inches to 3.0 inches. All of these files have been saved in multiple locations. Dr. Philbin also has a copy of all the files on a CD-R. I am posting a 1-inch .png version of the logo in this blog; however, I am not posting a vector graphic or large version, for proprietary purposes.

design guide for the logo

Hello,

Does anyone know how to upload an image from my computer to blogger? I don't have any hosting space for my images, so I suppose it would have to be imbedded into the blog entry.

I wanted to post a design guide with images and graphics. However, in lieu of posting the .pdf, I will just put up the copy for people to comment on. It is a little heavy on the typography terminology, but I wanted to be as specific as possible.

------------------------------------------

"The font for the exterior words is Optima. The font for the interior 'TSC' is Adobe Caslon Pro. The bullets in between the words are glyphs from Adobe Illustrator’s Adobe Caslon Pro regular font. The ratio of the size of the exterior words to the interior is 3:10. For example, if the interior words were 100pt, the exterior words would be 30pt.

The 'I' is a graphic, modified from Adobe Caslon Pro’s capital 'I'. The height is increased by approximately 35%. The serifs remain adnate and bilateral. However, the upper two terminals are raised slightly above the cap height and the lower two terminals slightly below the baseline. This causes the letter to meet the cap height and baseline at a curve rather than with the traditional horizontal slab. It appears at 10% opacity.

The three elements of the logo – the circle, 'TSC', and the 'I' – are aligned vertically as well as horizontally to keep the logo symmetrical and balanced. These should not be repositioned.

Avoid placing the logo on a colored background. The knockout also makes the solid letters appear smaller and the 'I' can very easily be lost."

Mapping team

I will have my section finished by Friday.

More work on site navigation

I have gone back to the tabs created with CSS and added a second layer for the about tab. This doesn't look too good right now, but I figure we can get it working the way our client has requested first and then work on making it look nice.

Anyway, here's what I have done: http://www.jmu.edu/news/tsc-test/about.shtml

p.s. If anyone else with coding experience wants to start working on this, please do. I don't want to hog this part of the project. I have access to servers and can post your ideas if you need me to.

Next Steps

Overall Design
With each iteration the design gets closer to final, I think. Thanks to Eric for patiently making the requested changes. The last changes were made per Dr. Pass' request and regarded navigation. I think it is a pretty good solution. Please make your comments.

Mapping, Navigation and Home Page
But that leaves an extra column space on the left open, meaning we have the entire spread as "real estate." Original design team (Tiffany et al), would you like to work on a design for the home page? Mapping team, do you have a map ready? Everyone else, did you look at the proposed navigation and see if you think it will work? We can always make adjustments to navigation later.

What do you think of incorporating the 10th anniversary theme into the home page? We will also need templates for following pages that are more informational. When my team looked at designs, we found a neat one that used the left 2/3 of the screen for content and the right column was always "marketese." An idea.

Coding templates
If everyone is okay with this plan, we'll ask Eric to continue coding the Home page template and any additional templates that we can work from. Unless someone else wants to take a stab. I was thinking of consistency. But then when we break up into content teams, each of us will code actual content pages.

Content pages
Please take a look at the proposed navigation and start making suggestions for how we can start dividing content pages.

One more template to look at - with tabs

This design uses javascript and CSS for the tabs:

Navigation

Comment on Test site

Dr. Hawthorne stressed the need for class time and that we will have to work on this outside of class time, so can you post your comments here about the template Eric designed?

Link to test design site

Just two pages so far, the home page and the about page. I have not added the left nav on the about page yet, but I think this gives us some more to discuss. Time for dinner.
